On October 12, WHO Europe announced that Albania and Armenia had met the region’s hepatitis B control targets. The European technical advisory group on immunisation validated the assessment after reviewing national reports. WHO links the achievement to more than twenty years of vaccination programmes and prevention of mother-to-child transmission. [1]

In surveys of children aged 6–8, no participants tested positive for the virus’s surface antigen, known as HBsAg: estimated prevalence in the surveyed group was 0%. This does not mean hepatitis B has disappeared from the entire population. It is a validated control milestone in a process that requires continuing prevention and surveillance. [1]
