In its 8 October release on the 2026 GEM Gender Report, UNESCO says Nepal closed a 33-percentage-point gender gap in lower-secondary completion between 1990 and 2024. The finding concerns that education level and period, not equality in every aspect of education. [1]

The report describes global parity in enrolment from pre-primary to upper-secondary education, while distinguishing enrolment from completion. Poverty and location can produce disadvantages hidden by averages. For pregnant girls and young mothers, costs, transport, childcare and stigma may still prevent a return to school. [1]
