Reading DNA has become much less costly. In the NHGRI series, the estimated cost of sequencing a human-sized genome falls from about US$95.3 million in September 2001 to about US$525 in May 2022. The chart uses all 78 observations in the table: these are historical data, not a quotation for 2026. [1][2]
The vertical scale is logarithmic: each interval represents a tenfold increase in cost. The estimate assumes a genome of 3 billion bases and draws on production costs at NHGRI-funded centers. It excludes some later activities, such as interpreting results, and is not the complete price of a clinical test. [2][3]
