An anomaly, a shared reference

Data period
1880–2025; annual anomalies relative to 1951–1980
Datobello chart dated

In the NASA GISTEMP series, 2025 is +1.18 °C above the 1951–1980 average; 2024 is +1.28 °C. The chart follows all 146 years from 1880 to 2025, using annual estimates from the file accessed on 26 October 2026. There is no complete annual value for 2026 yet, so it is excluded. [1][2]

An anomaly is a departure from a reference, not an absolute temperature or a departure from the pre-industrial period. The series combines land and ocean information and can be updated with late reports and corrections. We show central estimates without uncertainty intervals: one lower year is insufficient to describe a trend spanning many decades. [3][4]
