Where does electricity come from?

Data period
2024
Datobello chart dated

In 2024, fossil fuels generated 59.1% of the world’s electricity. Renewables supplied 31.9% and nuclear power 9.0%; together, the latter two categories reached 40.9%. This chart measures electricity generated, not all energy consumed or power-plant capacity. The fossil share fell, yet fossil generation in absolute terms rose by 1.4%: a smaller slice can belong to a larger pie. These are 2024 data, published by Ember in April 2025, not a measurement of 2026. [1][2]
